Empowering Women, Building Skills and Setting New Standards in Solar Energy

Without exception, Enfin holds its Engineering, Procurement and Construction contractors (EPCs) to global Performance Standards as articulated by the International Finance Corporation (IFC). The 9 megawatt Gwayang solar project in George is more than a renewable energy installation, it is a living example of Enfin’s commitment to the IFC’s performance standard. In these circumstances, opportunities such as skills development, safety excellence and collaborative partnership all work together to shape South Africa’s clean energy future.

Alignment with IFC Performance Standard II

Empowering the next generation of women in energy deals specially the IFC Performance II which aims to set standards pertaining to non-discrimination and equal opportunity.

A cornerstone of the Gwayang project is the Female Learner Apprenticeship Programme, a partnership between Enfin Energy Finance, Solar Energy Africa and Africa Skills, supported on the ground by the Gwayang energy site. Through this initiative, young women gain hands-on experience across solar system design, installation and maintenance. They learn alongside engineers, site managers and technical mentors, building confidence, competence and a foundation for long-term careers in a sector where women remain underrepresented.

This Programme aligns well with Enfin Energy Finance’s commitment to gender inclusion through the Enfin Women’s Fellowship and Academy (EWFA), which supports women graduates entering the energy sector with training, mentorship and pathways to employment. Across both initiatives, the message is clear: the future of energy must be inclusive, equitable and driven by opportunity.

A project build on collaboration and technical excellence

Constructed by Solar Energy Africa, the Gwayang solar project features a 20 MVA substation, cutting-edge transformers and advanced switchgear systems, combing engineering excellence with large-scale clean-energy delivery. As the financing, insuring and long-term maintenance partner Enfin Energy Finance ensures that this infrastructure remains reliable, efficient and sustainable for years to come.

10 000 Injury free hours: A Milestone that reflects a top-of-mind occupational health and safety culture, discipline and leadership.

By 31 October 2025, the Gwayang project reached an outstanding achievement: 10 000 injury-free hours worked. Yet again, the safety of workers is an apex priority for Enfin Energy Finance in alignment with the IFC Performance Standard II.

This milestone tells a deeper story of how the team operates. Every task is carefully planned; risks are anticipated and proactively managed and work stops when something doesn’t feel right. It demonstrates that productivity and safety can and must live side by-side.

Why Safety Excellence Matters for Investors

For investors and partners, this milestone is an impact indicator: risk is being effectively identified and well-managed, systems function optimally, hazards are controlled and safety is part of the culture not just a mere checkbox.

The financial investment in the Gwayang project is easy to measure in rand and timelines. But the real return is far broader:

  • The existence of an uncompromising occupational health and safety culture
  • Employees are learning, practising, embracing and reshaping how they think about safe work practices.
  • The lessons gained here will be imbued with every person long after this project ends.

If the mindset built on this site prevents even one serious future incident, the value of that protection is immeasurable. This is not only an investment in infrastructure, but more importantly, an investment in people.

This is the kind of culture that strengthens quality, reputation and long-term value for every stakeholder involved.
